President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed have commenced an official state visit to Singapore today, marking a pivotal chapter in Maldives–Singapore relations as the nations commemorate the golden jubilee of formal diplomacy.

At the invitation of President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, the visit extends until July 2. A ceremonial welcome will be held tomorrow, with President Muizzu set to call on President Tharman and attend a state banquet featuring the unveiling of a commemorative stamp.
The programme encompasses high-level bilateral dialogues with Premier Lawrence Wong and senior ministers. Key topics include trade expansion, urban and infrastructural planning, capacity development, technical cooperation, and issues of multilateral importance. Several memoranda of understanding (MOUs) on sustainability, vocational training, environment, and other areas are expected to be formally signed.
A dynamic business forum will also convene, featuring Maldivian and Singaporean investors, while a community gathering is scheduled for the President to meet Maldivians based in Singapore.
This year marks a significant milestone: 50 years since the Maldives and Singapore officially established diplomatic ties on February 20, 1975 . President Muizzu has already extended formal greetings to Singapore’s leadership, underscoring his hope that both countries will “continue to build on their achievements and strengthen their partnership”.
The delegation accompanying the President includes nine Cabinet ministers and senior officials, covering key portfolios such as foreign affairs, finance, trade, tourism, education, and infrastructure.
Analysts note that this state visit—President Muizzu’s first to Singapore since taking office—signals renewed momentum in bilateral cooperation. Areas such as port operations, urban housing development, and vocational education are expected to benefit from Singapore’s global expertise .
