Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has successfully concluded an extensive training program for Passenger Boarding Bridge (PBB) operations, gearing up for the grand opening of Velana International Airport’s New Passenger Terminal on July 26.
A total of 46 operational staff have been trained to operate the advanced PBB systems, which will be introduced in the Maldives for the first time with the new terminal. These boarding bridges represent a major technological leap for the country’s aviation sector, allowing passengers to move directly from the terminal to the aircraft in a safe, weather-protected environment — eliminating the need for ground transportation and enhancing overall comfort and convenience.
MACL’s comprehensive training included both international and domestic components to ensure the highest operational standards. Fourteen employees participated in advanced training in Malaysia, gaining hands-on experience with international best practices and operational methods used at major regional airports. Meanwhile, 32 staff members completed intensive local training programs, which featured extensive simulator exercises designed to replicate real-world scenarios and prepare them thoroughly for live operations.
The program focused on developing technical proficiency, adherence to safety protocols, and excellence in passenger service. Prior to deployment, all trained staff underwent rigorous simulator sessions to build familiarity with the PBB systems and emergency procedures.
As part of its strategic knowledge transfer plan, MACL will utilize the Malaysia-trained staff as master trainers to further develop operational capacity within the organization. This approach ensures sustainable expertise and smooth operations as the new terminal begins service.
