Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has officially announced the implementation of an advanced baggage handling system at Velana International Airport’s (VIA) new passenger terminal, which is set to open on July 26, 2025.
According to MACL, the new system will dramatically enhance both efficiency and security. It is designed to process up to 1,200 bags per hour — around 20 bags per minute — with 80% to 90% of operations fully automated. This marks the first time the Maldives will deploy state-of-the-art 3D baggage screening technology, similar to systems used at leading international hubs like Kuala Lumpur International Airport and Singapore Changi Airport.
In a major departure from the current practice, passengers will no longer be required to scan their luggage outside the terminal before check-in. Instead, they will show their tickets at the entrance and proceed directly to the check-in area, which will feature 47 counters and six self-check-in kiosks. The spacious new layout is expected to significantly reduce queues and improve overall passenger flow.
The new baggage screening process will include a three-phase system:
- Phase One: After check-in, baggage will undergo automatic screening through four advanced EDS (CTX) 3D scanners. Any flagged items will be sent for further inspection.
- Phase Two: Bags requiring additional checks will be reviewed by officers from Aviation Security Command (AVSEC) and Maldives Customs Service at dedicated desks, using integrated systems to ensure thorough examination.
- Phase Three: Final screening will involve dual-view machines at six stations. Bags found with prohibited items will be opened in a secure area in the presence of their owners.
For arriving passengers, MACL has addressed long-standing issues of delays and overcrowding by introducing six baggage claim belts instead of four. Supported by high-speed scanning and release systems, this upgrade aims to reduce waiting times and improve the overall arrival experience. The arrival hall will also be larger to accommodate increased passenger volumes comfortably.
With the new terminal scheduled to open on July 26, MACL emphasized that these technological advancements demonstrate the Maldives’ commitment to delivering world-class airport services. The improvements are set to strengthen Velana International Airport’s position as a premier gateway, supporting the nation’s booming tourism industry and elevating the travel experience for both local and international passengers.
