MET Office Warns: Rough Seas and Heavy Rain to Impact Maldives Over Next 2–3 Days

By Ahmed Ashraf Published July 11, 2025

The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has issued a caution as weather conditions deteriorate across the northern and central atolls over the next two to three days due to intensified southwest monsoon activity.

At the core of this forecast is an active southwest monsoon system combined with a circulation forming west of the archipelago, driving widespread rainfall throughout the nation. Several islands may also face thunderstorms and episodes of heavy downpours.

Wind speeds are expected to increase significantly: southern atolls will see winds of 8–18 mph, while central and northern atolls may experience winds ranging from 13–23 mph. In cloudier regions, gusts could escalate to as high as 45 mph. Consequently, seas are forecast to remain rough across all areas, with the threat of swells during high tide periods.

Local fishing fleets and marine travelers have been advised to exercise heightened caution, as hazardous seas and wind conditions pose navigational risks. The MET Office reminded seafarers to stay alert to rapidly changing conditions.

Meteorologists project that this unsettled weather will continue for the next 48 to 72 hours before gradually abating, returning to calmer, more stable conditions throughout the central and northern atolls.
