During the discussion, Secretary-General Botchwey reiterated the Commonwealth’s continued support for the Maldives across priority sectors. She welcomed the President’s leadership in championing the voices of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) on the global stage, particularly in areas such as democratic governance, economic resilience, and sustainable growth.

President Muizzu outlined his administration’s bold national agenda, including the ambition to elevate the Maldives to developed country status by 2040. He stressed that collaboration with the Commonwealth remains critical to achieving this goal, especially in advancing trade, investment, and the blue economy.

The two leaders exchanged views on shared interests, focusing on strengthening democracy, enhancing governance, and fostering sustainable development in fisheries and tourism—key sectors that underpin the Maldives’ economic future.

Today’s engagement marks a renewed commitment to deepening ties between the Maldives and the Commonwealth, further anchoring the nation’s role in global dialogues that shape the future of vulnerable island nations.
