The ceremony, which began at 6:00 a.m., was attended by Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef, Cabinet Ministers, and senior government officials, symbolizing the unity and commitment of the nation’s leadership to uphold the hard-won sovereignty of the Maldives.

Upon their arrival, the President and First Lady were warmly received by Minister of Defence Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon and Minister of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage Adam Naseer Ibrahim, marking the start of a solemn and dignified celebration.

The highlight of the ceremony was the ceremonial hoisting of the national flag — a moment that underscored the pride and sacrifices of generations past. A special prayer was recited, invoking blessings for continued peace and prosperity. The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) military band concluded the event with a stirring rendition of the national anthem, resonating across the capital as a reminder of the country’s strength and resilience.

Independence Day, celebrated annually on July 26th, marks the Maldives’ liberation from British protectorate rule in 1965. This year’s 60th anniversary serves as a powerful reminder of how far the nation has come — and how committed its current leadership is to securing an even stronger, sovereign future.

Under President Muizzu’s leadership, the Maldives continues to reaffirm its independent identity while advancing national development with unwavering resolve.
