Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has strongly condemned the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) protest held in Malé last night, describing it as a cowardly and terrorist act carried out under the false banner of freedom and democracy.
In a post shared on X, the Vice President denounced the protest as a deliberate attempt to disrupt peace and destabilize the country, stating that the event was “planned against a legitimate government” under the guise of people’s power and freedom of expression. He emphasized that such actions violated the Constitution and the laws governing public assemblies in the Maldives.

Vice President characterized the act of gathering large crowds, then defying police instructions and disrupting a lawfully permitted event, as a reckless and cowardly maneuver by the MDP leadership that endangered the lives of citizens. “This shows that the MDP has failed to uphold the very principles it claims to represent” he declared.
The Vice President also commended the Maldives Police Service for their courage and discipline in dispersing the violent demonstration, ensuring the safety of citizens and protecting national stability amid the opposition’s provocation.

Vice President’s remarks come as part of the government’s broader message that violence and deception cannot be disguised as democracy, and that the administration will continue to uphold law, order, and the safety of the Maldivian people.
