President Muizzu emphasized the importance of aligning one’s actions with the teachings of the Holy Quran, advocating for introspection among citizens regarding their contributions to societal well-being. He expressed concern over prevailing negative behaviors, such as personal attacks stemming from political differences, workplace conflicts, and familial disputes, which erode human dignity. He reminded the audience that the Quran upholds the inherent dignity of every individual and calls for mutual respect. “Elevating oneself by belittling others and claiming the right to say whatever one desires is not true freedom of expression,” he stated. “Rights come with limitations and restrictions; without them, human society cannot progress positively.”
This discourse on respectful communication gains particular relevance in light of recent events involving First Lady Sajidha Mohamed. Following allegations made by opposition activist Mariyam Zubair during a Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) protest, which implicated the President’s son in the government’s decision to ban vaping, First Lady Sajidha has initiated a civil lawsuit against Zubair, MDP Chairman Fayyaz Ismail, and the MDP itself. She asserts that these unfounded claims have jeopardized her son’s safety and future prospects. Legal representative Aishath Azima Shakoor confirmed the filing of the lawsuit, emphasizing the potential criminal implications of the allegations.
