Bank of Maldives (BML) has commenced the construction of a new branch in Shaviyani Kanditheemu, marking another step in the bank’s ongoing efforts to enhance nationwide access to financial services.
The groundbreaking ceremony, held on Sunday, was attended by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, senior government ministers, BML Chairperson Ahmed Ali Habeeb, and the bank’s CEO and Managing Director, Mohamed Shareef, alongside other senior officials.
The new branch underscores BML’s commitment to strengthening its physical presence across the atolls. The bank currently operates a branch in Sh. Funadhoo and maintains ATM services across all inhabited islands within Shaviyani Atoll — ensuring residents have access to essential banking services closer to home.
As the country’s largest financial institution, BML’s network now spans 42 branches across all 20 atolls, supported by 193 self-service banking centres and 251 ATMs. In addition to its physical reach, the bank continues to expand digital and agent banking services, enabling greater financial inclusion and convenience for customers nationwide.
The Kanditheemu branch project forms part of BML’s long-term strategy to decentralize banking services and support economic development in outer islands, aligning with President Muizzu’s broader vision for equitable development across the Maldives.
