Chinese tourist’s whereabouts unknown: Maldives Police appeal for information

By Ahmed Ashraf Published January 27, 2025

Maldivian Police have intensified their efforts to locate Su Xiaoning, a 30-year-old Chinese national who has been missing since October 2024. Su arrived in the Maldives on a tourist visa on October 13, 2024, and was last seen checking out of a guesthouse in Malé on the morning of October 24, 2024. There is no record of her departure from the country since then.

Concerned by the prolonged silence, Su’s family reported her disappearance to the Maldives Police Service through the Chinese Embassy on January 22, 2025. In response, the police have disseminated her information to all relevant departments and are actively conducting search operations.

Authorities are appealing to the public for assistance. Anyone with information regarding Su Xiaoning’s whereabouts is urged to contact the Serious and Organized Crime Investigation unit at 9911099 promptly. The police have expressed gratitude for the public’s ongoing cooperation in such matters.

This case underscores concerns about tourist safety in the Maldives. In recent years, there have been several incidents involving missing Chinese tourists. For instance, in April 2023, the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) conducted a search operation for a Chinese tourist who went missing while snorkeling near a resort.

The Maldives, renowned for its picturesque islands and vibrant tourism industry, remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of its visitors. Authorities are dedicated to thoroughly investigating such incidents and implementing measures to prevent future occurrences.

As the search for Su Xiaoning continues, the Maldives Police Service urges both residents and visitors to remain vigilant and report any information that could assist in locating her.
