Dhiraagu Makes History: Fibre Broadband Now Reaches Every Inhabited Island in the Maldives

By Ahmed Ashraf Published October 10, 2025

Dhiraagu has achieved a landmark national milestone, becoming the first and only telecommunications provider in the Maldives to deliver high-speed fibre broadband to every inhabited island across the archipelago.

The company marked the achievement with a special event attended by Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan, Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim, senior government officials, Dhiraagu board directors, and key industry stakeholders.

With this nationwide rollout, Dhiraagu now operates the largest high-speed data network in the country, offering fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) internet access to all Maldivian households. The milestone positions the Maldives among a select group of countries globally that have achieved 100% FTTH coverage — a benchmark of advanced digital infrastructure.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Ihusaan lauded the company’s contribution to national progress, stating,

“Dhiraagu is the company that has truly connected the nation, becoming the first to deliver high-speed fibre broadband services to every inhabited island across the Maldives. This historic milestone is a source of national pride. On behalf of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and the citizens of the Maldives, I extend our sincere gratitude to Dhiraagu for this remarkable achievement”.

Dhiraagu CEO and Managing Director Ismail Rasheed described the project as a long-anticipated vision brought to life through extensive investment and technological innovation.

“This achievement reflects years of planning and dedication. From strengthening international connectivity via major submarine cable systems to establishing a north-to-south fibre backbone and connecting each island through phased rollouts — our team and partners have made this vision a reality,” Rasheed said.

The company emphasized that the completion of its fibre network is a key enabler for digital inclusion, economic development, and the government’s broader Smart Nation vision. Enhanced connectivity will support e-learning, e-health, fintech, and digital governance initiatives across remote communities, reducing the digital divide between Malé and outer atolls.

For over three decades, Dhiraagu has played a central role in the nation’s telecommunications evolution, consistently pioneering innovations that have strengthened its identity as “The Nation’s Connection.”
