The leadership of State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has been placed under temporary management, following the dismissal of its Managing Director Ahmed Shamah Rasheed on Tuesday.
STELCO confirmed that Deputy Managing Director Dr Ali Azwar has been appointed as Acting Managing Director, assuming responsibility for the company’s operations with immediate effect.
Shamah, who was appointed to the post on 7 September last year, served for just over four months. No official reason has been disclosed for his removal.
Further changes followed shortly after the leadership transition. STELCO also relieved Azhad Rameez, who served as Head of the Procurement Department and General Manager, of his duties later the same afternoon.
The company has yet to announce whether permanent appointments will be made in the coming days or provide details on the scope of the interim arrangement.
STELCO, which is responsible for electricity generation and distribution across the Maldives, is currently in the midst of preparations for the annual peak electricity demand season, typically experienced during the month of Ramadan.
