Economic Ministry Announces Extended Business Hours for Ramadan and Shawwal

By Hussain Shinan Published February 10, 2025

Male’, Maldives – The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade has unveiled new operating hours for shops, cafes, and restaurants during Ramadan and the first seven days of Shawwal, effective from February 15. The announcement is part of the government’s efforts to ensure smooth business operations during the festive period.

According to the Ministry, retail outlets will be permitted to open as early as 5:30 a.m. and remain open until 1:00 a.m. throughout Ramadan and the first week of Shawwal. In a separate directive, cafes and restaurants are allowed to operate from 5:30 p.m. until 3:00 a.m. during Ramadan. For the first seven days of Shawwal, these establishments will shift their opening hours to start at 4:30 a.m., with closing times remaining at 3:00 a.m.

The Ministry further clarified that all cafes, restaurants, and takeaway services currently holding 24-hour permits in residential islands must adhere to these revised schedules during the specified period.

Officials stated that the new hours aim to accommodate the unique demands of the Ramadan period while ensuring that business operations remain regulated and consistent across the country. The extended hours are expected to boost economic activity during the holy month and post-Ramadan celebrations, providing a stable framework for both businesses and consumers.

As the festive season approaches, the government continues to balance economic growth with cultural observance, ensuring that both the public and private sectors are well-prepared to serve the needs of the community during this important time of the year.
