Expect Delays: MACL Warns of Passenger Overload During Hajj Exit Windows

By Ahmed Ashraf Published May 27, 2025

Velana International Airport (VIA) is set to experience heightened activity as approximately 1,000 Maldivian pilgrims prepare to depart for the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage. The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has issued a travel advisory from May 26 to 30, anticipating significant passenger volumes between 10:30 AM and 2:00 PM on these dates.

Traffic Management Measures Implemented

To manage the expected surge, MACL has announced that vehicle drop-offs will be restricted to the International Terminal. Parking areas are anticipated to be heavily congested. Travelers are encouraged to utilize taxi services or MACL’s complimentary ferry service operating from Nasandhura between 10:00 AM and 11:30 AM on the specified dates.

In collaboration with the Ministry of Islamic Affairs and the Maldives Hajj Corporation, MACL is facilitating the departure of pilgrims through four dedicated flights operated by Saudia Airlines and Maldivian, scheduled for May 26, 27, and 29, 30.

Enhanced Passenger Services

To ensure a smooth experience, MACL has introduced additional measures, including dedicated waiting areas for families and a designated photography zone for pilgrims. Furthermore, under the Makkah Route Initiative, a special immigration counter managed by Saudi officials has been established at VIA, allowing pilgrims to complete Saudi immigration procedures prior to departure.

Public Advised to Plan Ahead

The Maldives Police Service has urged the public to anticipate increased traffic around the airport on May 26, 27, 29, and 30. Additional officers will be deployed to assist with traffic management. Travelers are advised to plan accordingly and cooperate with on-site personnel to ensure timely arrivals and departures.

For real-time updates and further information, passengers are encouraged to follow MACL’s official channels.
