The Ministry of Tourism and Environment has handed over the development of water and sewerage systems for 100 housing units in Kolhufushi, Meemu Atoll, to Fenaka Corporation Limited, marking a key step toward making the long-completed homes fully habitable.
The project, valued at USD 738,000, is scheduled to be completed within five months, according to officials. Once finished, the new utility systems are expected to address long-standing concerns among residents, who have been awaiting essential services since the completion of the housing units earlier this year.
Construction of the housing units began in 2019 and was completed in January 2025, but the absence of water and sewerage infrastructure had delayed their full use. The homes were developed by the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure as part of the government’s social housing initiative, and represent the first instance of row houses being built on privately owned land under a state-led housing programme in the Maldives.
Each housing unit spans 1,200 square feet and includes three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a living area, kitchen, and laundry room. The government invested a total of USD 7.83 million in the construction of the housing project.
Officials said the handover of the utility works to Fenaka is expected to accelerate efforts to make the homes fully functional, enabling residents to move in with access to safe water and proper sewerage services. The project is part of broader government efforts to ensure that housing developments are supported by essential infrastructure and public services.
