Final Construction Works Prompt MACL to Adjust Velana Airport Traffic Before 26 July Opening

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 11 hours ago

Velana International Airport (VIA) is entering the final stage of preparations for the highly anticipated opening of its new passenger terminal on July 26, with Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) announcing temporary traffic changes to support critical construction activities.

Effective from 11:00 PM on July 12 until midnight on July 21, two lanes of general two-way traffic will be diverted to a newly constructed road in front of the new terminal building. This measure is designed to ensure the smooth continuation of landside road and drainage system works, a crucial component of the terminal’s overall readiness.

During this period, taxi pickup and queue areas will be moved to the edge of the passenger walkway shade near the western parking area. However, taxi drop-off points and MTCC public transport pickup and drop-off locations will remain unchanged, maintaining a degree of normalcy for passengers. In addition, MACL’s internal shuttle buses will operate from the relocated pickup and drop-off point near the walkway shade. To manage vehicle circulation more effectively, north-to-south U-turns will only be allowed at the Police Checkpost area.

These final infrastructural adjustments mark a significant milestone in the airport’s major expansion project. Once operational, the new terminal is expected to significantly boost VIA’s capacity and improve the overall travel experience, strengthening its role as a critical international gateway for the Maldives’ thriving tourism industry.

MACL has called on all passengers and transport service providers to adhere to the revised traffic arrangements and follow on-site signage to ensure safety and minimize disruptions during this critical phase. With the opening coinciding with Maldives’ Independence Day celebrations on July 26, the new terminal is set to symbolize a new era of growth and connectivity for the nation.
