The inaugural conference of the College of Nationalism (Dhivehi Qaumiyyathuge Isvaru), titled Kalhuohfunmi-Dhivehi Qaumiyyathuge Dharubaaru, has successfully concluded, marking a significant milestone in the promotion of Maldivian nationalism. The event saw the announcement that the conference will be held biannually, with the goal of fostering greater understanding of Maldivian culture and heritage.
During the one-day event, nine research papers were presented by experts from various fields. The papers delved into a variety of subjects, including the introduction of Islam to the Maldives, ancient Islamic art and design, the formation of the Maldives as a nation, and a deeper exploration of Maldivian culture. There were also studies that traced the origins of the Maldives, providing valuable insights into the nation’s history.
The Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture, and Heritage emphasized that the conference serves as a vital platform for comprehensive discussions on nationalism, aimed at encouraging new ideas that promote a stronger connection between Maldivians and their islands.
Ahmed Shakir, the College’s Dean of History (Kashima), expressed his support for the event, highlighting President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s commitment to rejuvenating traditional values and instilling them in the nation’s citizens. “The establishment of the College of Nationalism was a step towards achieving this goal, and the success of this first conference shows that we are on the right path,” Shakir stated in an interview with PSM News.
Mohamed Amir Ahmed, Director-General of the National Archives, also spoke about the significance of the conference. He emphasized that it plays an essential role in reviving nationalism and fostering a sense of national pride among Maldivians.
The conference, held in collaboration with the Islamic University of Maldives and the Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture, and Heritage, was inaugurated by Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef. It consisted of three sessions and saw participation from individuals across various sectors, contributing to a meaningful and insightful exchange of ideas.
Looking ahead, the conference is expected to continue fostering intellectual discussions and contributing to the growth of Maldivian nationalism.
