By Ahmed Ashraf Published January 25, 2025

Today addressing at the Broadcasting Commission’s ‘Vision of the Future’ competition ceremony, First Lady Sajidha Mohamed emphasized the necessity for responsible and respectful journalism in the Maldives. She urged media outlets to produce content that adheres to linguistic standards and contributes positively to the nation’s social fabric.

Promoting Quality Content

First Lady Sajidha highlighted the importance of creating media content that aligns with language norms and revitalizes the country’s weakening social cohesion. She encouraged parents to motivate their children to engage with local children’s programs on radio and television, fostering an appreciation for the Dhivehi language from a young age.

Broadcasting’s Historical Significance

Reflecting on the pivotal role of broadcasting services in the Maldives, the First Lady noted their contributions in alleviating boredom, bringing joy, imparting religious and moral principles, and educating the public on language, history, culture, health, and craftsmanship. She also acknowledged the sector’s diligence during critical incidents such as Victory Day, the Enama boat disaster, and the Tsunami disaster.

Enduring Relevance Amid Digital Platforms

Addressing the evolving media landscape, First Lady Sajidha acknowledged the rise of digital platforms like Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok. However, she emphasized that traditional media, including radio and television, continue to fulfill roles that digital platforms cannot entirely replace. She advocated for inspiring interest in these mediums among children to ensure their continued relevance.

The First Lady’s call to action underscores the importance of ethical journalism and the preservation of cultural values in the rapidly changing media environment of the Maldives.
