In a strategic pivot to bolster healthcare services, the State Trading Organization (STO) is transforming its underutilized AI-powered Smart Store in Hulhumalé Phase 1 into a fully operational pharmacy. The initiative, announced by Managing Director Shimad Ibrahim at STO’s Annual General Meeting on May 18, aims to address the community’s growing need for accessible medications.
Launched in July 2023, the Smart Store was celebrated as the Maldives’ first cashier-less retail outlet, utilizing artificial intelligence to streamline shopping experiences. Despite its technological advancements, the store experienced low customer engagement, prompting STO to reassess its utility.
“The conversion is already underway, and we anticipate the pharmacy will be operational within the next two weeks,” stated Ibrahim. He emphasized that the move is driven by a commitment to public service rather than profit, aiming to ensure a steady supply of essential medications to the community.
Further expanding its healthcare footprint, STO plans to establish an additional pharmacy in Hulhumalé Phase 2. This expansion aligns with the organization’s broader strategy to make healthcare more accessible across the Maldives.
To support these initiatives, STO has recently entered into an agreement with an Indian pharmaceutical company to import a diverse range of medicines, ensuring a consistent and reliable supply for its pharmacies.
This transformation reflects STO’s adaptive approach to meeting public needs, repurposing innovative retail spaces to serve critical healthcare functions in the community.
