From Sun to Storm: Bay of Bengal Depression Dims Maldives’ Christmas Tourism Hopes

By Ahmed Ashraf Published December 21, 2024

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that the low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal has escalated into a depression. Originating off the coast of Andhra Pradesh, India, this weather phenomenon has intensified according to the latest bulletin released this morning.

Experts anticipate that the system will maintain its status as a depression for approximately 12 hours, commencing from 08:00, before it starts to weaken. Currently, there is no forecast indicating an escalation into a cyclone.

The progression from a low-pressure system to a cyclone involves several stages: it advances from a low pressure to a well-marked low pressure, then to a depression, followed by a deep depression, and finally into a cyclone. In this region, the most recent cyclone was named Cyclone Fengal, and should another cyclone develop, it will be designated Cyclone Shakti, a name provided by Sri Lanka.
