Hafizs Honored, Salaries Doubled: President Muizzu Turns Words into Action

By Ahmed Ashraf Published August 4, 2025

In a landmark move that reaffirms the government’s unwavering commitment to Islamic values, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has delivered on his pledge to double the monthly state allowance for Hafizs—those who have memorized the Holy Quran. The allowance has officially increased from MVR 2,000 to MVR 4,000, with deposits already underway, according to the Ministry of Islamic Affairs.

The President’s decision to enhance the Hafiz allowance was announced on June 24 last year following Cabinet consultations. The increase is a cornerstone of his broader initiative to cultivate Quranic knowledge and elevate the noble status of Hafizs in Maldivian society.

This measure is not just financial—it represents a national policy shift to revitalize Islamic education. The Muizzu administration has consistently prioritized the spread of Quranic teachings, recognizing it as a sacred duty and a moral cornerstone of Maldivian identity.

In line with this vision, sweeping changes have also been made to streamline certification for Quran memorizers. Previously, students from the Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) were required to sit additional exams at the Quran Center to obtain official recognition. That requirement has now been waived—IUM graduates who complete Quran memorization are directly eligible for certification.

Moreover, the government has taken critical steps to enhance the academic value of the Hafiz certificate. In collaboration with the Maldives Qualifications Authority (MQA), the certification has been formally upgraded to a Level 4 (Advanced Certificate) under the Maldives National Qualifications Framework. This move empowers Hafizs with greater academic and employment opportunities, cementing their place in the nation’s development agenda.

The government is also increasing funding to support Quranic scholarship, with plans to expand awards, resources, and institutional support for memorization programs. The President has repeatedly affirmed that fostering a new generation of Hafizs is essential for both spiritual prosperity and national progress.

Under President Muizzu’s leadership, the Maldives is witnessing a renewed embrace of Islamic heritage—an era where faith and education go hand in hand, and where the memorization of the Holy Quran is honored not only spiritually but also academically and socially.
