The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has announced that operations at the existing terminal of Hanimaadhoo International Airport will be relocated to the ground floor of the newly built terminal starting Tuesday, 15 October 2025.
The relocation marks a significant step in the preparations for the official opening of the new Hanimaadhoo terminal, which forms part of a major infrastructure project to enhance airport facilities in the northern Maldives.
According to MACL, the move is necessary to enable Code C aircraft, such as Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 types, to use the full length of the new runway. To ensure this, nearby buildings and tall structures adjacent to the existing terminal must be vacated and cleared to maintain safety standards during flight operations.
All relevant details regarding the transition were shared with the Hanimaadhoo Island Council and other government ministries on 9 October, MACL said in a statement.
Final Preparations Underway for Terminal Opening
MACL is currently carrying out final preparations for the launch of the new terminal. This includes testing airport systems and machinery, training staff, and refining passenger service procedures to ensure that the terminal meets both national and international aviation standards once operational.
The Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) process — an essential phase that ensures the smooth transfer of services to a new facility — has also commenced, signaling that the airport’s expansion is entering its final stage.
A Milestone for Northern Maldives
The redevelopment of Hanimaadhoo International Airport is among the most transformative projects for the northern region, aimed at improving connectivity and stimulating regional economic growth.
Once fully operational, the expanded airport will allow larger aircraft to land and operate regular international flights, improving travel convenience for northern residents and boosting tourism potential across nearby islands.
