Effective 22 June 2025, Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH)’s 11‑storey “Hiyala Wing” is undergoing extensive maintenance, prompting a temporary redistribution of key services to Dharumavantha Hospital.
At the top of the operational hierarchy, emergency obstetrics and gynaecology services previously on IGMH’s 2nd floor have been shifted to the 17th floor of Dharumavantha Hospital. Similarly, labour and induction facilities, formerly housed on the 3rd and 4th floors of Hiyala, have also been relocated to the 17th floor.
For patient accommodation, inpatient wards A and B—previously on the 5th and 6th floors—are now operating from the 18th and 19th floors of Dharumavantha Hospital. Furthermore, the obstetrics and gynaecology surgical theatre, once located on Hiyala’s 9th floor, has been moved to Dharumavantha’s 12th floor theatre complex.
The renovations are part of a scheduled improvement plan aiming to enhance infrastructure and patient care. While inpatient and surgical operations have been transitioned, IGMH confirms that the Outpatient Department (OPD) on the 1st floor, as well as intensive care and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) on the 10th floor, remain unaffected by the renovation efforts.
IGMH acknowledge that service transfers—especially bed relocations and surgery rescheduling—will not cause any operational disruptions. Also, they reassure the public that all key maternity and inpatient services continue uninterrupted at Dharumavantha. The elevator maintenance and associated renovation work in Hiyala are progressing as planned, with a completion timeline yet to be confirmed.
The strategic move underscores the growing integration between Malé City’s major public hospitals. Dharumavantha Hospital recently expanded its capacity by adding 194 additional beds jointly with IGMH, enhancing the capital’s overall healthcare resilience.
