India Ready to Mediate Amid Soaring Tensions Between Tel Aviv & Tehran

By Ahmed Ashraf Published June 13, 2025

India sounded a clear warning early Friday as fresh turmoil erupted between Iran and Israel. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) voiced profound concern over reports of strikes on nuclear facilities—calling for immediate restraint from both sides.

In a firm statement, the MEA urged both capitals to “avoid any escalatory steps.” It stressed that existing diplomatic and dialogue channels must be activated to de-escalate and address the deeper causes of conflict. India underscored its longstanding ties with both nations, affirming its readiness to mediate and assist where possible.

Indian missions in Tehran and Tel Aviv have already moved to protect nationals. Advisories urge citizens to remain vigilant, stay close to shelters, and follow instructions from local authorities.

This diplomatic appeal follows dramatic developments on June 13, when Israel launched “Operation Rising Lion”—a sweeping air campaign targeting Iran’s nuclear and military sites, including key locations at Natanz, Fordow, Tehran, Isfahan, and Arak . The strikes reportedly claimed the lives of senior IRGC commanders like Major Generals Hossein Salami and Mohammad Bagheri, along with nuclear scientists.

Iran responded swiftly with a drone offensive over Israel. Over 100 drones were intercepted by Israeli air defenses. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei condemned the attack, labeling it a “declaration of war” and vowing “severe punishment”.

Global alarm flared. The United Nations called for maximum restraint. Key international actors—the EU, China, Turkey, Gulf nations—urged diplomatic intervention to prevent a regional conflagration . Economic volatility followed: oil prices spiked and major markets jittered.

India’s stance is resolute. The MEA warned that further escalation could unravel regional stability. With Middle East peace fragile, India positions itself as a beacon of balance—championing diplomacy over destruction.

Why This Matters for Maldives:

Our island nation depends heavily on regional stability. Disrupted energy corridors and shaken markets could affect fuel imports and tourism. India’s voice for restraint aligns with global hopes for calm.
