In a significant move to bolster Maldives’ transportation infrastructure, India has extended a generous grant of MVR 100 million to enhance the nation’s ferry services. The funding, part of the third phase of the High Impact Community Development Project (HICDP), aims to improve inter-island connectivity, thereby uplifting community livelihoods across the archipelago.
The formal signing ceremony took place at the Maldivian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with key dignitaries in attendance. Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel represented the Maldivian government, while Indian High Commissioner G. Balasubramanian signed on behalf of India. Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen also participated, underscoring the project’s significance for the nation’s transport sector.
This initiative aligns with the commitments made during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s state visit to India in October 2024, reflecting the strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations.
The grant will fund 13 projects under the HICDP, focusing on expanding and modernizing ferry services to ensure reliable and efficient transportation for Maldivian citizens. These projects are designed to address local needs, fostering socio-economic development and enhancing the quality of life in remote islands.
India’s support for Maldives extends beyond transportation. Recently, India rolled over a USD 50 million Treasury Bill to provide emergency financial assistance, reflecting its commitment to the ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy.
Furthermore, India’s involvement in the Greater Malé Connectivity Project (GMCP), a 6.74 km bridge connecting Malé with Villingili, Gulhifalhu, and Thilafushi, exemplifies its role in transforming Maldives’ infrastructure landscape.
These collaborative efforts underscore the enduring partnership between India and Maldives, aiming to foster sustainable development and regional stability in the Indian Ocean region.
