The Jumhooree Party (JP) has strongly denounced former President Abdulla Yameen’s recent remarks against party leader Qasim Ibrahim and his son Ibrahim Siyad Qasim, branding them as baseless slander intended to tarnish their reputation. The party confirmed that its legal team is exploring all possible measures to hold Yameen accountable.
In an interview given to Adhadhu this week, Yameen attempted to justify the unlawful jailing of Qasim and Siyad in 2018, claiming it was linked to bribery of Supreme Court judges. He went so far as to allege that Qasim and Siyad financed property purchases for judges in Malaysia and signed guarantees for housing in Hulhumalé.
Rejecting these accusations outright, JP spokesperson Ali Solih described Yameen’s statements as “false, unsubstantiated, and malicious” stressing that such remarks will not go unanswered. “Our legal team is currently reviewing these defamatory claims. We will take all necessary legal action against Yameen for deliberately misleading the public and slandering Qasim and Siyad” he said.
The interview also saw Yameen casting similar allegations against other senior statesmen, including his half-brother and former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and his son Ahmed Faris. Maumoon’s office has since dismissed Yameen’s narrative, indicating that legal action is also being considered.
Yameen’s latest outburst highlights a familiar pattern of targeting respected leaders with politically motivated allegations. As JP moves forward with legal recourse, the party has reaffirmed its commitment to defending Qasim Ibrahim’s name and legacy from what it calls “cheap political propaganda.”
