Justice Hussain Shaheed Appointed to Judicial Service Commission, Strengthening Judiciary

By Ahmed Ashraf Published April 8, 2025

In a decisive move to bolster the integrity of the Maldivian judiciary, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Supreme Court Justice Hussain Shaheed as a member of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC). This appointment underscores the administration’s unwavering commitment to upholding judicial excellence and transparency.

Justice Shaheed, who ascended to the Supreme Court bench on March 19, brings a wealth of experience and a distinguished academic background to the JSC. His legal education spans esteemed institutions, including Al-Azhar University in Cairo and the Kulliyyath al-Dhiraasath al-Islamiyya in the Maldives. Further enhancing his credentials, he earned a master’s degree in Islamic judicial science and Shariah policy from the Islamic University of Maldives.

Throughout his illustrious career, Justice Shaheed has demonstrated an unwavering dedication to justice. His roles have encompassed serving as magistrate of Feydhoo Magistrate Court in Addu City, senior magistrate of Holhudhoo Magistrate Court in Noonu Atoll, and a judgeship at the Criminal Court. His exemplary service led to his appointment to the High Court in 2018, where he was later designated Acting Senior Judge in November 2022, a position formally confirmed on October 30, 2023.

The JSC plays a pivotal role in overseeing the judiciary’s administration, ensuring that judicial proceedings are conducted with the highest standards of fairness and integrity. Comprising ten members—including representatives from the Supreme Court, High Court, lower courts, the President, Parliament, Civil Service Commission, Attorney General’s office, attorneys, and the public—the commission is instrumental in maintaining the judiciary’s independence and accountability.

Justice Shaheed’s appointment follows the resignation of Justice Husnu Al Suood, who stepped down amid a corruption investigation. This strategic appointment is a testament to President Muizzu’s proactive approach to reinforcing the judiciary’s credibility and the rule of law in the Maldives.

During the appointment ceremony at the President’s Office, Justice Shaheed took his oath in the esteemed presence of President Muizzu, with Supreme Court Justice Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim administering the oath. This event marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to enhance the judicial framework of the nation.

The Maldivian public can take confidence in the administration’s dedication to fostering a transparent and robust judicial system. The appointment of Justice Hussain Shaheed to the JSC is a clear indication of the government’s resolve to ensure that the pillars of justice remain strong and unyielding in the face of challenges.
