Velana International Airport’s long-awaited new passenger terminal is on track to open on July 26, 2025, with Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) marking a major operational milestone today by conducting its first comprehensive check-in system trial with national carrier Maldivian. The trial was closely overseen by MACL Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef, underscoring the company’s commitment to delivering a seamless and modern travel experience from day one.
As the first airline set to operate from the new terminal, Maldivian played a key role in the Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) process, designed to ensure all systems and procedures function flawlessly before official operations begin. Today’s exercise involved testing self-check-in kiosks, automated baggage handling systems, boarding bridges, and other critical passenger services, providing staff with valuable hands-on experience and allowing MACL to identify and resolve any potential issues in advance.
The new terminal, set to officially open on Independence Day, is a central part of the government’s ambitious efforts to transform the Maldives into a premier global aviation hub. Spanning 78,000 square meters, the terminal is designed to handle up to 7.5 million passengers annually—five times more than the current facility’s capacity. Featuring six aerobridges, 38 immigration counters, modern baggage handling systems, and a range of new passenger amenities, it is expected to significantly ease congestion and enhance overall service quality.
Preparations are in full swing as MACL continues intensive physical trials, staff training, and stakeholder engagement sessions in the lead-up to the launch. These include security and X-ray system training, boarding-bridge docking exercises, and simulated passenger flow scenarios with volunteer participants. In addition, airlines, resorts, and ground service providers are actively involved to ensure a smooth transition when the terminal begins phased operations, starting with Maldivian and expanding to other airlines throughout August and September.
Today’s successful trial not only reflects MACL’s operational readiness but also highlights the strong leadership of the Managing Director, who has closely guided each phase of the preparations. With the opening just weeks away, the new terminal is poised to redefine air travel in the Maldives and reinforce the country’s status as a world-class tourist destination.
