In a significant move towards enhancing the Maldives’ aviation infrastructure, the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) convened with the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) to discuss the operationalization of the new passenger terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA). The new terminal, a pivotal component of the Maldives’ broader airport expansion initiative, is designed to accommodate up to 7.5 million passengers annually. Spanning 78,000 square meters, the facility boasts 40 departure gates, 38 immigration counters, and six aerobridges, with provisions for three additional bridges in the future. This development is poised to significantly alleviate congestion and streamline passenger flow at VIA.
Construction of the terminal commenced in 2016, with the Saudi Bin Laden Group spearheading the project. While initial projections slated the terminal’s completion for 2022, the timeline has experienced adjustments. Recent statements from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu indicate an anticipated opening in October 2025, aligning with the peak tourist season and ensuring optimal readiness.
The collaborative meeting between MACL and MATI focused on the Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) process, a critical phase ensuring that all systems, staff, and stakeholders are prepared for the terminal’s inauguration. Emphasis was placed on integrating advanced technologies and passenger-centric services to enhance overall travel experiences.
As the Maldives continues to solidify its position as a premier global tourist destination, the successful launch of VIA’s new terminal stands as a testament to the nation’s commitment to infrastructure development and service excellence.
