Airports Company Limited (MACL) is advancing smoothly toward the operational launch of Velana International Airport’s new passenger terminal on 26 July 2025, having so far conducted familiarization tours for 45 key stakeholders, including 36 airlines, as part of its phased Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) rollout.
These ongoing tours introduce partners—from airlines and general aviation agents to government bodies like Maldives Immigration and the Maldives National Air Traffic Services (MNATS), as well as taxi, ferry, resort, and guesthouse operators—to the terminal’s design and processes. To date, more than 1,000 MACL staff have been briefed, with additional sessions scheduled.
Under the guidance of ORAT consultants, physical trials are taking place to ensure staff are adept at navigating the terminal, operating key equipment like X‑ray machines, and managing passenger flows. Full-scale simulations with live aircraft and volunteer passengers will follow in the coming weeks to validate operational readiness.
The new terminal, spanning approximately 78,000 m² and designed to handle 7–7.5 million passengers annually—well above the current 1.5 million capacity—showcases several modern amenities. Included are six self-service check-in kiosks, automated baggage handling systems, airbridges, a visual docking guidance system, and multiple immigration and screening counters.
MACL plans to initiate operations with national carrier Maldivian Airlines on 26 July. International flights will gradually transition in phases to mitigate operational risks, ensuring a smooth ramp-up ahead of the peak tourism season.
The ORAT-led familiarization initiative reinforces MACL’s dedication to safety, efficiency, and world-class service. As the terminal nears launch, these strategic preparations aim to position Velana International Airport as a leading regional hub—and gateway to the Maldives’ thriving tourism economy.
