This stakeholder engagement is part of the Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) process, a comprehensive initiative ensuring that all systems, personnel, and procedures are fully prepared for the terminal’s inauguration. The discussions emphasized integrating advanced technologies and passenger-centric services to streamline operations and elevate the overall travel experience.
The new terminal, a cornerstone of VIA’s extensive $1 billion expansion project, spans 78,000 square meters and is designed to accommodate up to 7.5 million passengers annually. It features 40 departure gates, 38 immigration counters, and six aerobridges, with provisions for three additional bridges in the future. This development is poised to significantly alleviate congestion and enhance efficiency at VIA.
Construction of the terminal commenced in 2016, with the Saudi Binladin Group spearheading the project. While initial projections slated the terminal’s completion for 2022, the timeline has experienced adjustments. Recent statements from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu indicate an anticipated opening in July 2025, aligning with the peak tourist season and ensuring optimal readiness.
MACL’s proactive engagement with stakeholders, including seaplane operators, is part of a broader strategy to coordinate with all entities involved in airport operations. This collaborative effort ensures that each party is prepared for the operational shifts associated with the new terminal’s opening.
As the Maldives continues to solidify its position as a premier global tourist destination, the successful launch of VIA’s new terminal stands as a testament to the nation’s commitment to infrastructure development and service excellence.
