MACL Rolls Out EV Baggage Fleet, Pledges Quieter, Cleaner Airport Ground Ops

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 7 hours ago

Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has introduced electric baggage tractors at Velana International Airport, marking a key advancement in sustainable airport operations. The switch supports national environmental goals by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality on the apron. Additionally, the new tractors operate more quietly, enhancing safety and comfort for ground staff.

This move follows MACL’s broader efforts to modernize its ground-handling fleet, which previously included buses, loaders and traditional baggage tractors . Adopting electric vehicles aligns with global aviation trends aimed at lowering carbon footprints. It also reinforces MACL’s commitment to environmental responsibility and echoes the government’s vision for an eco-friendly Maldives.

As part of its sustainable strategy, MACL plans to expand the use of low-carbon technologies across its operations, paving the way toward a cleaner and more efficient airport—bolstering Velana’s reputation as the country’s primary gateway.
