Land reclamation works in HA. Dhidhdhoo are progressing as planned, with 41 hectares reclaimed so far, achieving 36.61 percent overall completion, signalling strong momentum in a project central to the Government’s northern development agenda.
The reclamation is being carried out by Leiv Eiriksson, one of the world’s largest trailing suction hopper dredgers, with a sand pumping capacity of 46,000 cubic metres per load. The high-capacity vessel has enabled rapid progress on land designated for airport development, housing initiatives, and essential community infrastructure.

Maldives Airports Company Limited commenced the Dhidhdhoo land reclamation works on 5 January 2026, following its commissioning by the Government as part of a nationwide push to expand strategic infrastructure beyond the capital region.
President Mohamed Muizzu has previously pledged that large-scale reclamation projects in the northern atolls would prioritise long-term connectivity, housing security, and economic opportunity. Announcing the Dhidhdhoo project, the President stated that the reclaimed land would serve as a foundation for sustainable development and regional growth.
Once completed, the Dhidhdhoo reclamation is expected to significantly enhance aviation connectivity in the north, support population expansion, and strengthen access to public services, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to balanced national development.
