Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) tonight hosted an exclusive media networking gala aimed at reinforcing its engagement with press partners ahead of the highly anticipated opening of the new passenger terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA). The event was attended by CEO and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, Deputy Managing Directors Mohamed Lamaan and Mujthaba Latheef, along with senior executive committee members. It provided a platform for personal dialogue and strengthened collaboration with key media outlets.
The gala preceded the official inauguration of the 78,000 m² terminal—scheduled for July 26, coinciding with the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day—which is designed to relieve current capacity pressures. Operating at over 2 million arrivals annually, VIA’s existing facility exceeds its 1.5 million passenger limit. The new terminal will increase capacity to over 7 million passengers per year, featuring modern amenities such as aerobridges and automated baggage systems.
MACL leadership highlighted the significance of media collaboration in the final countdown to launch, which will now enter its crescendo as operational readiness accelerates across all fronts, including recent infrastructure milestones like the completion of the water pipeline system.
This gala underscores MACL’s commitment to transparent stakeholder engagement and effective communication as it prepares to unveil a transformative upgrade in Maldives’ aviation infrastructure.
