By Ahmed Ashraf Published May 27, 2025

The Maldives’ aviation sector took a significant step forward today as the second edition of the Aviation Forum – Connect Maldives convened at the Hulhulé Island Hotel. The event brought together over 150 industry leaders, including airport and airline executives, tourism stakeholders, and government officials, to discuss the future of aviation in the island nation.

Organized by Medium Events, the forum featured four panel discussions, keynote speeches, and a dedicated workshop, focusing on topics such as innovation in airport operations, enhancing traveler experiences, and promoting sustainability in aviation. Notable speakers included Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, CEO of Maldives Airports Company Ltd (MACL); Munaz Ali, Airport Manager at Etihad Airways and Chairman of the Airline Operators Committee; and Mahjoob Abdullah, Head of Aviation at Voyages Maldives.

A highlight of the forum was MACL’s announcement of the official opening date for the new international terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA), scheduled for July 26, 2025. This development is anticipated to significantly enhance the country’s capacity to accommodate the projected influx of over two million tourists this year.

The forum received support from sponsors including SITA, Inner Maldives, and Avia Maldives, with endorsements from the Airline Operators Committee, the Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO), and the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI).

As the Maldives continues to strengthen its position as a premier global travel destination, the developments discussed at the Aviation Forum – Connect Maldives 2025 signal a commitment to advancing the nation’s aviation infrastructure and services to meet growing demands.
