The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has strongly denied claims circulating in some local media outlets and social media platforms suggesting that the Government of Singapore has issued a travel advisory against visiting the Maldives.
In an official statement released on Sunday, the Ministry clarified that no such advisory has been issued by Singapore in recent times. According to the Foreign Ministry, Singaporean authorities have directly confirmed that no new travel warning or restriction has been communicated to their citizens concerning the Maldives.
“The Singapore government has affirmed that the statement being widely shared is not a recent advisory. It is not reflective of Singapore’s current stance towards travel to the Maldives,” the Ministry stated.
Officials expressed concern over the potential harm such misinformation could cause to bilateral relations and the national economy. “Spreading false narratives about friendly nations can have unintended consequences on the Maldivian people and our economy,” the statement added.
The Ministry called on all media outlets and individuals to act responsibly, especially when reporting matters involving countries with longstanding diplomatic and economic ties with the Maldives. “We urge everyone to verify facts before publication and refrain from disseminating misleading information,” the statement emphasized.
Singapore and the Maldives have maintained close diplomatic relations over the years, with both countries actively cooperating in trade, tourism, and development. Singapore remains a key source market for tourism and a valued development partner.
As the Maldives continues to welcome visitors from around the world, the Foreign Ministry reiterated that no foreign government, including Singapore, has issued travel restrictions specifically targeting the country.
