A new regional initiative aimed at strengthening digital resilience and countering online extremism has been launched in the Maldivian capital, Malé. The Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition (IMCTC) inaugurated the training program titled “Analysis of Extremist Discourse, Hate Speech in the Digital Media: Smart Countering Tools and Technologies” on Monday, bringing together 30 participants from Maldivian media and academic institutions.
The program is part of IMCTC’s ongoing strategic media initiatives designed to equip media professionals with advanced skills to identify, analyze, and counter extremist narratives. It focuses on promoting moderation, tolerance, and responsible journalism in the digital age.
Deputy Minister of Defense Fathmath Mizna Ali attended the opening ceremony, alongside senior officials from the defense, civil, and media sectors. In her remarks, Mizna described the initiative as a “fruitful collaboration” between IMCTC and the National Counter Terrorism Center (NCTC), commending the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for its continued support in combating extremism and enhancing regional cooperation.
“This program underscores the media’s vital role in countering hate speech and fostering a culture of peace,” Mizna said. “Accuracy and verification are core Islamic values — and essential tools in protecting our societies from the spread of misinformation and hatred.”
The training explores the structure, motives, and psychological effects of extremist and hate speech while introducing participants to modern tools for content verification, digital forensics, and responsible reporting. It also emphasizes the importance of awareness campaigns and the role of ethical media practices in safeguarding intellectual and social stability.
Targeted at journalists, academics, and civil society representatives, the initiative forms part of IMCTC’s broader communications strategy to build capacity across member states. The Coalition’s long-term vision seeks to unite global media efforts in countering terrorism and promoting peaceful coexistence through education, awareness, and collaborative partnerships.
