Maldives Police Investigate Hindu Priest Advertising Spiritual Services

By Ahmed Ashraf Published January 21, 2025

The Maldives Police Service has initiated an investigation into an individual named “Master Durga Rao Guruji,” who has been promoting spiritual treatment services within the country. According to a statement released on Tuesday, authorities became aware of social media advertisements in which Guruji claims to offer services such as fortune-telling, black magic removal, and solutions for health and marital issues. The promotions also provide a local contact number for appointments and indicate his current presence in the Maldives.

In response to these activities, the police are collaborating with relevant authorities to pursue necessary legal actions. They have urged the public to report any such advertisements promptly, emphasizing the importance of addressing matters that contradict Maldivian culture and Islamic principles through official channels rather than sharing them among individuals.

This incident is not isolated; in September 2023, an Indian national named Ganesh Dubey was detained and subsequently deported for conducting spiritual healing sessions in Malé without proper authorization. Dubey had advertised his services online and organized sessions at a local hotel, actions that led to public criticism and legal repercussions.

The Maldives, constitutionally a 100% Muslim nation, prohibits the practice and promotion of other religions. Authorities have consistently taken action against individuals attempting to introduce or promote non-Islamic religious activities. For instance, in February 2023, self-proclaimed faith healer Mala Ali was blacklisted and barred from entering the country after violating visa regulations by offering unlicensed healing services.

The police reiterate their commitment to upholding the nation’s religious and cultural integrity and encourage citizens to remain vigilant, reporting any activities that may undermine these values.
