Tourist arrivals in the Maldives have risen by 7% compared to last year, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Tourism. As of February 18, a total of 358,999 visitors had entered the country, marking an increase of 23,532 tourists from the 335,467 recorded during the same period in 2023.

China has emerged as the leading source market, with 54,438 tourists visiting the Maldives so far this year. Russia and the United Kingdom follow closely, contributing 35,391 and 34,817 arrivals, respectively. Other key source markets include:

  • Italy – 32,474 tourists
  • Germany – 21,466 tourists
  • India – 16,727 tourists
  • France – 14,414 tourists
  • United States – 11,067 tourists
  • Poland – 8,188 tourists
  • Switzerland – 7,225 tourists

Resorts Remain the Top Accommodation Choice

Currently, the Maldives boasts 172 operational resorts, 796 guesthouses, 155 safari vessels, and 15 hotels catering to visitors. Resorts remain the preferred choice among tourists, with 69% (247,548 tourists) opting for luxury island stays.

Guesthouses accounted for 25.9% of arrivals, hosting 92,868 tourists, while 9,663 visitors stayed in hotels. Safari vessels, a popular choice for travelers seeking liveaboard experiences, accommodated 8,664 tourists.

The rise in visitor numbers reflects the continued strong demand for the Maldives as a top travel destination, with tourism authorities actively promoting the country in key international markets. The government has set ambitious targets for 2024, aiming to build on this momentum and further enhance the Maldives’ global appeal.
