Maldives State Shipping Opens Applications for Maritime Scholarships

By The Standard Published January 8, 2025

The Maldives State Shipping Company Private Limited (MSS) has announced two maritime scholarships as part of its “Kalaaseen” scholarship program, aimed at encouraging Maldivian youth to build careers in the maritime industry.

The scholarships provide an opportunity for diploma-level studies in Malaysia, offering two specialized courses: a Diploma in Nautical Studies and a Diploma in Marine Engineering.

Eligible candidates must be between the ages of 18 to 25 and meet specific entry requirements, including a minimum of five IGCSE ‘O’ Level credits, good physical and mental health, and excellent eyesight. The course duration is three years and four months, and scholarship recipients are required to serve at MSS for at least 18 months after completing their studies.

Applications for the program are open until January 21.

MSS, a state-owned shipping enterprise established in February 2020, plays a crucial role in the Maldives’ trade network, handling 50-60% of shipments between Malé and Colombo, Sri Lanka. The company also operates shipping routes connecting the Maldives with key trade hubs such as the UAE, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Kuwait, Indonesia, and China.

In addition to its core shipping services, MSS has launched several initiatives in recent years to expand its operations and trade routes. The introduction of the “Kalaaseen” scholarship program underscores the company’s commitment to strengthening the maritime industry by nurturing a skilled workforce.

This latest initiative by MSS reflects ongoing efforts to support the professional development of young Maldivians while contributing to the growth of the national maritime sector.
