Maldives to Launch Major Sports Infrastructure Projects in 2025

By Hussain Shinan Published February 6, 2025

In a significant move to bolster the nation’s sports infrastructure, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced plans to commence construction on several key facilities this year. These include international-standard multi-story complexes for futsal and netball, as well as a dedicated surfing stadium.

During his Presidential Address inaugurating the Parliament for the year, President Muizzu detailed his administration’s commitment to advancing sports development across the Maldives. He emphasized that these projects are integral to his presidential pledges and aim to provide state-of-the-art facilities for athletes and sports enthusiasts.

The proposed netball complex is slated for Hulhumalé Phase I, while the futsal complex will be situated in Hulhumalé Phase II. Each facility is designed to house five stadiums, offering a comprehensive range of sports services. According to the Ministry of Sports, Fitness, and Recreation, these complexes will adhere to modern standards, ensuring accessibility for individuals with special needs and providing top-tier amenities for both athletes and spectators.

In addition to these developments, the government has initiated plans for a world-class surfing and bodyboarding arena in Malé. This initiative follows the successful hosting of the Maldives Pro Bodyboarding competition in August, underscoring the nation’s growing prominence in the international surfing community.

Furthermore, President Muizzu revealed that construction of a drifting stadium in Hulhumalé is set to commence within the year. This announcement comes months after the government revoked permission for a separate area in Hulhumalé previously designated for racing and drifting activities.

Highlighting the broader impact of these initiatives, President Muizzu stated that investing in sports infrastructure not only promotes health and wellness but also paves the way for Maldivian athletes to achieve international acclaim. He cited the recent qualification of a Maldivian athlete for the Olympic Games as a testament to the nation’s potential.

The government’s strategic focus on enhancing sports facilities aligns with its ambition to host major regional and international tournaments, further solidifying the Maldives’ position as a hub for athletic excellence.
