Maldives Top Diplomat Targeted with Ominous Threats During Colombo Visit

By Ahmed Ashraf Published February 21, 2025

The Maldives Police Service has initiated an investigation into death threats made against Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel during his official visit to Sri Lanka. The threats, issued by a Sri Lankan national previously deported from the Maldives, were posted on the social media platform X.

In a statement to the media, the police confirmed their awareness of the threats and announced an active investigation in collaboration with relevant authorities.

The individual behind the threats, who has a Maldivian child, claimed he was being denied access to his child and directed multiple posts towards the Maldives’ Immigration Controller. In one post, he suggested that Minister Khaleel’s vehicle might encounter an accident in Sri Lanka, leading to a fire and potential fatality. Another post questioned the security arrangements for Minister Khaleel in Colombo, ominously hinting at possible harm. Additionally, he insinuated that danger could reach the minister’s room disguised as hotel staff.

Minister Khaleel’s visit to Sri Lanka, from February 18 to 21, 2025, was at the invitation of Sri Lankan Foreign Minister H.M. Vijitha Herath. The visit aimed to strengthen bilateral relations and explore cooperation in various sectors. During his stay, Minister Khaleel met with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya. He also engaged with the Maldivian community in Sri Lanka and discussed potential collaborations with the Sri Lankan private sector.

The Maldives Police Service is treating the threats with utmost seriousness and is working diligently with Sri Lankan authorities to ensure the safety of Minister Khaleel and to bring the perpetrator to justice.
