Mohamed Nazeer, a trailblazer in the Maldivian tourism industry and a key figure behind Sunland Hotels, has died while undergoing medical treatment in the United Kingdom. He was widely recognized for his instrumental role in shaping the Maldives’ global tourism appeal.
Born in S. Hulhudhoo, Nazeer embarked on his journey in tourism in 1976, a time when the Maldives was emerging as a destination for adventurous backpackers and diving enthusiasts. He co-founded Sunland, a family-run travel agency, which laid the foundation for what would become one of the country’s most respected hospitality brands.
As Director of Sunland Hotels and its luxury arm, Coco Collection Resort Brands, Nazeer was known for his innovative marketing strategies and deep understanding of the global travel market. His leadership helped elevate the Maldives into a premier destination for high-end tourism.
Beyond his corporate achievements, Nazeer also served as the Maldives’ Trade Ambassador to the United Kingdom, strengthening bilateral trade ties and promoting the nation’s economic interests abroad.
He was the elder brother of the late Dr. Abdul Majeed Abdul Bari, a former Islamic Minister of the Maldives.
Nazeer’s passing marks the end of an era for Maldivian tourism. His vision and dedication transformed the nation’s hospitality landscape, leaving a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations.
