Air quality across the Maldives has plunged to dangerous levels, triggering a nationwide health alert as thick haze spreads over large parts of the country.
The Maldives Meteorological Service confirmed that air pollution has intensified across all regions, with the northern and central atolls experiencing the most severe impact. Officials reported sharply reduced visibility, dropping below three kilometers in several locations, a clear indicator of hazardous atmospheric conditions.
Meteorological assessments attribute the worsening situation to persistent northeasterly winds, which are driving haze into the Maldives and trapping polluted air over the islands. According to the Met Office, these conditions are not expected to clear immediately and are likely to persist for at least the next five days.
As concerns mount, authorities are urging the public to take the situation seriously. The Met Office has called on residents to strictly adhere to health guidance issued by national health officials, particularly when considering outdoor activities.
The Health Protection Agency has issued clear precautions to reduce health risks during the haze episode. The agency advises wearing protective masks when outdoors and limiting time spent outside as much as possible. Special warnings have been issued for vulnerable groups, including people with existing medical conditions, pregnant women, and children, who are strongly advised to remain indoors to avoid prolonged exposure.
Health officials stress that poor air quality can aggravate respiratory and cardiovascular conditions and pose serious risks if ignored. With visibility dropping and pollution levels rising, authorities warn that public cooperation is critical until conditions improve.
Officials continue to monitor the situation closely and have indicated that further updates will be issued as weather patterns evolve.
