President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to safeguarding its territorial sovereignty, emphasizing that the nation’s strategic location in the Indian Ocean will not be exploited by any foreign entity.
In an exclusive interview with Sri Lanka’s The Ceylon Today, President Muizzu stated, “No one will be given the opportunity to misuse the Maldives’ economic zone.” He highlighted the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the region, asserting that the Maldives will not allow its territory to be used in ways that could disrupt the Indian Ocean’s tranquility.
While underscoring the nation’s autonomy, President Muizzu also expressed support for freedom of navigation. He noted that foreign vessels are permitted to traverse Maldivian waters, provided they respect the country’s sovereignty and adhere to international obligations. “When we allow a foreign vessel to enter our territory, we always consider national interests, the principles involved, and the international obligations for the safety and security of the region,” he explained.
Addressing recent concerns over the docking of the Chinese research vessel Xiang Yang Hong 03 in Maldivian ports—a move that came after Sri Lanka denied the same vessel entry—President Muizzu clarified that the decision was made independently and not as a gesture against any particular nation. He emphasized that the vessel was not granted permission to conduct research within Maldivian waters, aligning with the country’s policy of not allowing foreign entities to carry out such activities in its maritime zones.
The President’s firm stance comes amid shifting geopolitical dynamics in the Indo-Pacific region. Since assuming office in November 2023, President Muizzu has advocated for a balanced foreign policy, aiming to protect the Maldives’ independence while fostering development. His administration has taken steps to reduce dependency on any single foreign power, including requesting the withdrawal of Indian military personnel stationed in the Maldives—a move completed by May 2024.
Furthermore, President Muizzu’s government has strengthened ties with China, signing multiple agreements to enhance bilateral cooperation. Despite these developments, the President maintains that the Maldives seeks to maintain amicable relations with all nations, ensuring that its foreign policy decisions are guided by national interests and regional stability.
As the Maldives navigates its path in a complex geopolitical landscape, President Muizzu’s assertions underscore a commitment to sovereignty, balanced diplomacy, and the nation’s long-standing reputation for hospitality and peace.
