“Maldivians With Ceylon” telethon closes with over LKR 230 million raised for Sri Lanka

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 7 hours ago

The “Maldivians With Ceylon” telethon has officially concluded with a record breaking total, as the final counting was completed yesterday following the 2.00 PM closure. A short while ago, the telethon’s independent audit firm, Crowe Maldives, confirmed the final verified amounts collected across all currencies.

According to the audit announcement, the telethon raised MVR 11,553,291.10, USD 51,088.31 and EUR 20 through public donations, corporate contributions and institutional support. When converted, the MVR portion alone amounts to approximately LKR 230.9 million, underscoring the scale of solidarity shown by the Maldivian public.

Based on current exchange rates, the full combined total amounts to approximately USD 800,730, marking one of the most successful humanitarian fundraising efforts ever conducted in the Maldives.

The telethon, organised by Public Service Media together with dozens of media outlets nationwide, was launched to assist Sri Lanka as the country battles severe flooding, widespread destruction and displacement linked to storm Dithuva. Throughout the campaign, state institutions, government owned companies, private businesses and tens of thousands of Maldivians contributed through various donation channels.

The independently audited totals mark the official close of the national relief initiative, which has reaffirmed the Maldives strong compassion and longstanding friendship with Sri Lanka during one of its most challenging crises.
