In a renewed push to meet its ambitious environmental target, the State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has officially commenced weekly tree-planting activities every weekend across its service islands. The initiative supports President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s nationwide pledge to plant five million trees within five years—a bold step toward climate resilience and environmental restoration.

STELCO’s Managing Director Hussain Fahmy confirmed the launch of the weekend planting campaign in a post on X this week, emphasizing the company’s commitment to contributing 500,000 trees toward the national total. “With the will of Allah, STELCO aims to plant half a million trees as targeted, contributing to the fulfilment of the President’s pledge,” Fahmy stated.
A Grassroots Push with National Impact
Under the new weekly format, STELCO teams are now actively planting trees on the islands where they operate, using weekends to engage more staff, communities, and local councils. The approach reflects a hands-on, grassroots model aimed at ensuring consistency while maximizing public participation.
This marks a significant operational phase in STELCO’s long-term plan, which aligns with the government’s broader climate agenda. The nationwide “Five Million Trees” program—launched by President Muizzu in 2024—seeks to boost carbon sequestration, preserve biodiversity, and green the country’s rapidly developing urban and inhabited zones.
A 500,000-Tree Commitment
STELCO’s pledge to plant half a million trees represents approximately 10 percent of the national goal. The utility began its commitment last year, but this week’s shift to scheduled weekend activities signals a more structured and accelerated approach to delivering on the promise.
With over 52,000 trees already planted as of late 2024, STELCO is steadily progressing toward its goal. The new weekend campaigns are expected to further increase momentum, especially as the southwest monsoon brings favorable planting conditions.
Supporting a Greener Future
The five-million-tree campaign, coordinated by the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, includes contributions from several public and private stakeholders. STELCO’s role, particularly in integrating reforestation with its utility operations, has been noted as a model for corporate environmental responsibility.
Fahmy underscored the long-term significance of the work: “Our efforts will benefit generations to come. It’s a duty we embrace with faith and purpose.”
