The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has issued a White Alert for the northern and central atolls today, warning of escalating storm conditions driven by an intensifying southwest monsoon. Affected regions include Haa Alif through Meemu atolls, with the alert active from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM.
During this period, persistent winds of 19–24 mph—with gusts up to 40 mph—are expected to buffet these areas, generating rough seas and challenging conditions for mariners.
In coastal waters, wave heights are forecast between 4 to 7 feet, with the northern and central sea zones becoming especially turbulent. The southern atolls are also expected to face generally rough seas, with further deterioration possible in isolated squalls.
Rainfall has been significant over recent days—Seenu Hulhumeedhoo recorded a peak of 57.6 mm, while other scattered heavy downpours have been reported on islands within the alert zone. Over the next 24 to 48 hours, the MET Office forecasts continued scattered showers, thunderstorms, and occasional heavy rainfall, particularly in southern and central islands.
These conditions align with the southwest monsoon’s active phase, which commenced over Maldivian waters on May 7 and traditionally brings stronger storms, heavy rains, and gusty winds from June through November.
Despite today’s widespread disturbance, the MET Office anticipates a gradual improvement in southern atoll weather by Sunday, while central and northern atolls should brace for continued unsettled conditions over the next three days.
