Minister Ihusaan hails President Muizzu’s vision as Maldives launches region’s first e-Visa system

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 2 hours ago

Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan, has hailed the launch of the Maldives e-Visa platform as a direct outcome of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s forward-looking digital vision, declaring it a historic milestone that positions the Maldives as the first country in the region to issue fully electronic visas.

Speaking at the official ceremony held today by Maldives Immigration, Minister Ihusaan said the launch of e-Visa resolves long-standing challenges faced by Maldivian companies employing foreign workers and by foreigners residing in the Maldives for extended periods. What was once a largely manual process has now been completely transformed into a modern, digital service accessible online.

He recalled that the initiative was born in early 2024, when visa stickers were running out and Immigration proposed reordering them. “Following that discussion, the President instructed us to digitize this service. Although this wasn’t common practice even in this region, today the Maldives becomes the first country to offer 100 percent electronic visas,” the Minister stated.

Minister Ihusaan emphasized that this achievement reflects the power of visionary leadership. “This demonstrates how, with a leader’s vision, those working under their direction can accomplish such initiatives. Our President shows us every day the path forward, providing us with directions that give us confidence in achieving our goals,” he said.

The e-Visa initiative, launched under the Maldives 2.0 vision of President Muizzu, marks a defining leap in digital governance, modernizing public service delivery and reinforcing the Maldives’ regional leadership in innovation and efficiency.
