The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) Research Conference 2025 officially opened today, marking the largest edition of the annual event since its inception. The two-day forum, held at Villa Nautica Paradise Island Resort, has drawn 240 participants, including academics, policymakers, and international researchers.
This year’s conference began with the launch of The Island Economist, a new economic and financial magazine published by the MMA. The inaugural issue was unveiled by Chief Guest and Minister of Education, Dr Ismail Shafiu.
Governor Highlights Importance of Research
Addressing the opening ceremony, MMA Governor Ahmed Munawwar emphasised that rigorous research is essential for sustainable economic policymaking. He noted that every study presented and every dialogue held during the conference contributes to strengthening the country’s financial resilience.
“Research is central to building a sustainable future,” Governor Munawwar said, underscoring the value of evidence-based policymaking in shaping long-term development.
Panel Discussions and International Participation
The programme features multiple panel discussions and research presentations. Among the notable speakers is former MMA Governor Dr Azima Adam, currently serving with the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, who is scheduled to participate in a key discussion session.
Another highlight was the launch of the MMA’s official research journal, The Maldives Journal of Economics and Finance, introduced by Professor Aishath Muneeza, Associate Dean of INCEIF University, Malaysia.
In addition, finalists of the Tamveel Finlit Festival 2025 were recognised at the event, receiving both awards and cash prizes for their contributions to financial literacy.
Record Number of Research Papers
This year’s conference saw a significant rise in scholarly engagement. A total of 40 research papers will be presented, including submissions from over 20 international researchers. The MMA reported receiving 39 applications for research funding and 20 article submissions for the newly launched Island Economist magazine.
An Expanding Annual Platform
The MMA Research Conference, first introduced in 2024, continues to gain momentum as a platform for advancing economic and financial research in the Maldives. Organisers say the growth in participation and academic output reflects the increasing interest in evidence-based policy development across the region.
The conference will continue tomorrow with further presentations and expert discussions on key economic issues affecting the Maldives and the wider global economy.
